Hinderwell Escape

The Cottage

This beautiful stone cottage sits back from the road in the pretty village of Hinderwell, between the old fishing villages of Staithes and Runswick on the North Yorkshire coast.

Beautiful stone cottage set back from the road

Ideally placed for beautiful beaches such as Runswick and Sandsend, for cliff top walks along the Cleveland way and the whole of the North York Moors on the doorstep, the cottage sleeps up to 7 in comfort.

The cottage interior is carefully and sympathetically decorated and designed with it’s age in mind.  Vintage and traditional furnishings complement the architecture whilst still providing modern comfort levels.  We have maintained traditional lime plaster and casein paintwork in the attic along with ancient woodwork, installed a woodburning stove in the sitting room to keep the traditional feel and selected vintage and traditional furniture for every room.  You will not find bland hotel styles here, but you will find modern essentials such as wi-fi and Freeview TV.

We are very environmentally conscious, and ask you to support local businesses where possible.  We have upgraded the kitchen facilities to swap the gas hob for an induction hob to reduce emissions and improve air quality, pairing it with an A rated “Glide & Hide” oven.  We have finally found lime based paint that works well on our ancient walls and are working our way through the house as we redecorate – this is breathable, oil free and absorbs carbon dioxide as it cures.

Out and About

The North Yorkshire coast has everything in one place: art, culture, wildlife, adventure.

Hinderwell Escape is the perfect base for you to explore.  Leaving the car, you can walk or cycle to enough attractions to occupy you for days.  This might include cliff top walks, fossil hunting at Runswick Bay, browsing the art and craft galleries in Staithes and relaxing with a glass and a meal in any of the local pubs.  Add in a bus journey and you have the whole coast from Saltburn to Scarborough in easy reach, and car access to the whole of the North York Moors.

Whitby has it all.  Walk the narrow streets of the old town, and sit on the harbour wall with fish and chips.  Shut your eyes, and between the cries of the gulls, you can almost hear the calls of the stevedores loading and unloading bales and barrels from the sailing ships of old. Step back into the present with the array of art and craft galleries, shops and activities to make the perfect  day.

Weary but happy, you make your way back to Hinderwell, where your holiday cottage awaits you for a relaxing evening of chat, a shared meal cooked from local ingredients purchased from local suppliers in Hinderwell and Staithes, and warm, comfortable beds to ready you for tomorrow’s adventures.
